Exterior Design
The elevation is made of clean rectangular blocks in white and charcoal grey. Thin flat roof slabs project beyond the walls, creating crisp shadow lines and shading the windows. A grey frame wraps around the first floor, giving it a strong outline, while large windows glow warmly at night. The car porch sits under a flat slab at the front, and a paved driveway with a green lawn completes the setting.

The side view shows how the design keeps the same language on every face, with a clean grey volume, slim sunshades and neat windows. Good landscaping and a compound wall in matching tones make the whole property feel polished.

Why This Layout Is Practical
Most daily activity happens on the ground floor, where two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, the living and dining rooms, and the kitchen with work area are located. This makes the house comfortable for elders and reduces stair use. The smaller first floor adds two more bedrooms and an upper living area, creating a quiet zone for children or study.
Because the first floor is only about half the size of the ground floor, the remaining roof becomes an open terrace that can be used for drying clothes, a garden or solar panels.
Grey and White: A Timeless Palette
Grey and white is one of the most popular colour schemes for modern Kerala homes. White reflects heat and keeps the house looking bright, while grey adds depth and hides dust and rain marks. Together they create a sophisticated look that will not go out of fashion. Adding warm lighting, wooden doors or plants softens the palette and makes it feel homely.
The Work Area Advantage
The kitchen in this house is supported by a separate work area, a feature that Kerala families value highly. Heavy cooking such as frying fish, preparing appam batter or making large batches of curry creates smoke, heat and mess. Doing these tasks in the work area keeps the main kitchen clean and presentable for guests. The work area can also hold a second sink, a grinder, a washing machine and extra storage racks, freeing up space in the main kitchen for daily use.
When planning a work area, give it good ventilation with an exhaust fan or large window, a durable floor that is easy to wash, and a door leading outside for easy disposal of waste.
Interior Ideas
- Carry the grey and white theme inside with a grey accent wall in the living room.
- Use wooden flooring or wood-look tiles in the bedrooms for warmth.
- Choose a modular kitchen with grey and white cabinets to match the exterior.
- Add a glass railing to the staircase for an open, modern feel.
- Use the upper living area as a TV lounge or study space.
Planning Tips
- Waterproof all flat roofs and slope them to drains.
- Use quality exterior paint to keep the white and grey surfaces looking fresh.
- Plan exterior lighting points early for the night-time look.
- Design the first floor structure to support future expansion on the terrace.
- Check permits on the Kerala Local Self Government Department website.
The designer has not shared a cost estimate for this house, so the budget will depend on local rates and finishes.
